Chong Resigns with United Until 2022

If you believed the January transfer rumors, it was all but certain that Manchester United’s Tahith Chong would be leaving this summer, thankfully that speculation is over after the 20-year-old winger penned a new contract on Monday to stay at United until the summer of 2022.

Chong was due to become a free agent in June and appeared to have failed to agree to new terms with United and was linked to possible moves to Inter Milan, Juventus and Barcelona.

Speaking on his new contract, Chong said: “When I joined Manchester United as a youngster, it was a dream come true.

“It is an honour every time I pull on the shirt and represent this club. I am working hard every day to improve and I know this is the perfect environment to develop my game.

“The opportunity to learn from the manager, his coaching staff and the world-class players here is fantastic.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was equally delighted with the signing adding: “Tahith works extremely hard every day, and he is constantly improving.

“His performances this season, whether for the first team or Under-23s, are a testament to his hard work, dedication to his character.

“We are pleased with the progress he has made since he stepped up from the Academy and are looking forward to continuing to develop his talent.

“Tahith has great potential; given his age, ability and work ethic, we can see that he has a bright future at Manchester United.”

Chong has made 14 first-team appearances since joining the United academy in 2016 and has six caps for Holland U-21 as well.

Terms of his contract weren’t disclosed but all indication have is around £30,000 a week.
